Evolution of the Strip - Part 3

As Schulz matured as an artist, his backgrounds became increasingly spare. He commented that he tried to avoid "anything that would interfere with the flow of the dialogue or the idea itself." For example, compare the earlier strips with this daily from November 20, 1997, that features two measures of music from the Pathétique Sonata, Opus 13. By this time Schulz has reduced his background to a few brief lines under Schroeder's piano and the musical score. Also notice the revolution that has occurred in Schulz's treatment of the music itself: some notes have been transformed into a gauntlet over which Snoopy runs while miserably bemoaning his fate.
